Catch me if you can!

The past few days have been particulary interesting on the Mandurah waterways not only have we been seeing our playful dolphins but this week they had a new playmate, Sammy the sea lion who visits us from Seal Island in Rockingham. The dolphins and Sea Lion swam together outside the Mandurah Ocean Marina on Sunday morning.

We have also had the opportunity to watch on two separate occassions on Monday dolphins playing with octopus, which is alot of fun to watch as the dolphins throw them through the air then chase them and do it all over again. Wednesday was another good chance for us to introduce our passengers to our baby dolphins as they played together while their mums chased fish. The babies are growing fast and are quite active and very playful learning about the boats and they seem to be just as interested in taking a look at us as we are in them. We also got the chance to show our passengers just how high our dolphins can jump with Scar and the rest of the pod joining us at the southern entrance to the Port Mandurah Canals as soon as we left the canals the chase was on with the dolphins enjoying every minute leaping out of the water and splashing people as they landed. They dolphins followed us all the way to the Mandurah Estuary Bridge and then all the way back to the canals again to the delight of our passengers.

The 4pm cruise we found the same pod of dolphins just outside the canals again and they were ready for round two. Once again they chased the boat and leaped out of the water having a great time, this time past the estuary bridge then back again. Hope you enjoy the photos as much as we did taking them.

Learning to Surf!

As we headed out on our 3pm cruise we quickly spotted a pod of dolphins near the Mandurah Ocean Marina, this pod came for a quick surf next to the boat but were more interested in catching an afternoon snack so we left this pod in search of some more dolphins. As we exited the Port Mandurah Canals we spotted the mums with the baby dolphins. There were 6 dolphins altogether including the babies. The mums took the opportunity to give the calves a lesson on riding the wake of boats the calves had a great time we went a little bit slower then usual so they could keep up. The calves are quite ready to start leaping out of the water like the adults do but its is great to watch them learning and we have a feeling Sonic in particylar might grow up to be a great jumper he is always trying new things and doing little jumps.

Competition Time!

After all the excitement from the 11am cruise, "Super Cat" headed out on its lunch time cruise an hour and a half of fish and chips, canal homes, bird life and yes you guessed it Mandurah's friendly dolphins. On this trip we caught up with an old friend Scar was out and about in the Mandurah estuary near Boundry Island. Scar and his pod then followed us through Sticks channel into the Peel Inlet, we turned around and lucky for us the dolphins still wanted to play. We were joined by another 3 dolphins now with 7 dolphins chasing the boat we were in for a great show. The pod followed us all the way back under the estuary bridge then continued into Manjar Bay as we cruised back through the canals. The dolphins put on such a great show it was like they had heard about the earlier dolphins and wanted to show off too. For some of our passengers it was their first time seeing dolphins so close.

Mandurah's Best Jumpers!

The 11am cruise onboard Bouvard Cruises "Super Cat" started well with passengers getting an up close look at two of our baby dolphins, later on as we were cruising back towards the Port Mandurah canals from the Estuary Bridge we heard a loud thud only to look over to our right and from the top bridge of the vessel see a dolphin looking at us. By this stage both crew and passengers were quite excited as the dolphin continued to put on a fantastic show, at one stage the dolphin took a rest so we all started to make some noise whistling and clapping to the dolphin and the more noise we made the more and higher the dolphin jumped. It was an amazing show of just how fantasitic Mandurah's dolphins are. All of our passengers left really happy with alot of great photos and left a little bit wet from the huge splashes the dolphin made.

Playing Around!

Yesterday Tuesday 9th Feb was an amazing day for the crew and passengers alike onboard Bouvard cruises "Super Cat". The day started with a visit from two of our cutest dolphins bubba Sonic and the youngest calf who is yet to be named. The mums both brought their babies into Manjar Bay to teach them how to fish, however we think the calves were more interested in playing. The passengers onboard, some all the way from Japan were so excited by the close encounter with the dolphin calves, little did any us expect what we would see later on in the cruise, and for the crew what would happen for the rest of the day.

Cutest Babies in Town!

We have been so lucky over the past few days as we are seeing more and more of the dolphins and they have been very playful. The dolphins have been playing in the wake of our boats quite often lately which is great to see and always alot of fun. The mother dolphins have also been very trusting with our boats around the newborn calves, normally they will keep them away from boats until they learn how to swim alot better and will put themselves between us and the calf to protect them. However we have found that if we give them some space and let them come to us the mothers are only to happy to show off their babies to us, and have been bringing the calves right up close to our boats at a very young age. We definately don't want to scare the dolphins and find that they trust us around their young calves, we think that the mothers themselves have grown up in the Mandurah water ways around our boats and know that we wont try to hurt them.

Baby Sonic has gotten alot better at swimming now it is similar to when a human baby learns to walk to have to practice for a while. Sonic has even started to swim not only under the bow of the "Dancing Dolphin" but his mother has started to bring him for swims in the wake of the "Super Cat" although he is trying to jump out of the water like his mum he has quite got it right yet but our passengers have had a great time today watching him try.

We will be having a baby naming competition very shortly to name two of the baby calves as we already have named Sonic, so keep an eye on the blog and send us your suggestions. We have put some photos from todays sightings on the blog and we hope you like them as much as we do.
